Retaining wall will double as a grandstand in a sport centre near the Petrela village in Tirana, Albania
Former football player Redi Jupi has teamed up with the Municipality of Tirana to create a modern sport and recreation centre near the Petrela village. The terrain was very inclined and unstable and Maccaferri Balkans was able to propose a retaining wall application to solve the problem and also serve as a grandstand for spectators.
This multi-sport centre will be in an area of about 38,000 sqm, surrounded by a 32,000 sqm pasture area. The project includes a sports school for 900 pupils, three football pitches, a summer camp court, a spa and fitness centre, a hotel for sports teams, dressing rooms, a grandstand for 200 people, a beach-volley court, and basketball and tennis courts.
The area where the multi-centre will be built is inclined and unstable. The investor was looking for a rapid-to-install, long-lasting and environmentally-friendly solution in keeping with the surrounding area. For this reason, he invited our engineers to inspect the jobsite and to propose the optimal solution, which was identified as a tiered retaining wall from gabion units (Zn 2.4mm, 6x8cm).
After the completion of the gabion walls, the client was very satisfied that the tiered walls will be used not only as retaining walls but also as a grandstand for spectators. Another benefit of the gabion solution is that they are filled with stone at the project site making our proposal the most environmentally- friendly solution.
