The final 2 stages of gabion cladding at the Polana tunnel portal are currently being installed.
The gabion cladding is formed from 0.5m thick gabion units engineered from double twisted steel wire mesh type 6×8, with a Galmac and additional polymeric coating. The units are secured to the surface that is to be clad.
The gabion units are then filled with rocks, to create this attractive facing with a natural rock appearance.
This approach is becoming more popular as an architectural and landscaping feature. The solution was selected as an alternative to concrete cladding due to economic and aesthetic reasons.
