马克菲尔泥石流拦石网主要用于沟谷或坡面以拦截土壤/水流（泥石流）或浅层溜坍产生的固体物质。泥石流拦石网一般是根据具体工程的场地情况、预期的泥石流固体量及流量定制的。当泥石流来袭，泥石流拦石网中的消能器会受力伸长并使得拦石网发生较大的变形以吸收泥石流的冲击动能。泥石流的静水压力也会因拦截作用而急剧衰减，最终使得泥石流中的固体物质停留在拦石网中。
