缓冲型拦石网一般适用于具有特定“释放空间”的工程，落石最终可以被拦截或引导滚向非保护区。 马克菲尔缓冲型拦石网结合了标准型拦石网耐冲击和简单挂网易维护的双重特点。与标准型拦石网将拦截网面下端与下支撑绳连接封闭不同，缓冲型拦石网的拦截网面更长，并顺坡自然垂落。经过与网面撞击和长时间的摩擦将落石的动能大量削减。
