柔性拦石墙属于被动防护系统的一种，对于坡面面积太大或坡面无施工作业条件的边坡，是绝佳的解决方案。例如，部分非常宽的斜坡或由于整个斜坡无法进入而无法拦截落石的条件。此外，他们还可以用于自然保护灾害、滑坡、落石、雪崩、水文地质问题等工程。

马克菲尔柔性拦石墙是采用加筋土结构建筑，结构用的填土大多可就地取材。有多种面墙可供选择，其中采用可恢复植被的面墙单元，可减对生态环境的影响。 由于柔性拦石墙采用加筋土结构，其拦截能力可以根据工程需求通过设计进行调整（最大可达20,000kJ）。不同于拦石网，柔性拦石墙可以连续承受多次落石冲击且无需进行维修。 通过有限元数值模拟，这种加筋土拦石墙的最大拦截能力可达20,000kJ。在实际工程中，只要有足够的占地空间，理论上防护能力是没有上限的。
