A Safer Future: Natural Hazard Mitigation Solution in Kennon Road

Maccaferri Steelgrid® HR System for rockfall mitigation and slope stabilization in the high-risk areas of Kennon Road

Simple to install, durable, environment-friendly, and effective natural hazard mitigation solution for the safety and security of infrastructure and motorists in the high-risk areas of Kenon road.

Kennon Road is one of the most hazardous roads in the Philippines and is deemed as one of the most ambitious, difficult, dangerous, and expensive civil engineering projects in South East Asia. The construction commenced in 1903, which employed more than 2,500 local and foreign workers. During its construction, numerous accidents happened where hundreds of workers plunged to their deaths.

On this Day, Kennon Road became the most scenic, historical, and oldest mountain highway in the Philippines and considered as a national treasure and heritage. The 33.53-kilometer road is the shortest route that leads to the highland city of Baguio.

Constructed in the mountain range of Benguet, the road is prone to frequent road slopes disasters such as debris flow, rockfall, and shallow landslides, especially during heavy rainfall, earthquakes, and typhoons.

Maccaferri Philippines supplied the rockfall netting for the slope stabilization and active protection systems of the high-risk areas along Kennon Road. Steelgrid® HR 30 was used as a drapery, offering high stiffness: high tensile strength at low strain and high punch resistance with low deformation that exceed the capability of traditional DT Mesh.

Installation of Steelgrid® HR is straightforward; the adjacent lateral rolls of mesh do not need to be overlapped, reducing product wastage and saving installation cost and time compared to other meshes. Simple to install, durable, environment-friendly, and effective natural hazard mitigation solution for the safety and security of infrastructure and motorists.

Goldrich Construction and Trading, as the contractor, completed the slope protection projects in 2019.

Maccaferri Philippines is ready and equipped to support the rehabilitation, improvement, and maintenance of Kennon Road to keep it hazard-free.
