Securing Roads and Slopes: Active Rockfall Protection System in Narra, Palawan

The municipality of Narra, Palawan, faced critical challenges from persistent soil erosion, threatening transportation infrastructure and community safety. Maccaferri's Active Protection System provided a sustainable solution to stabilize slopes, ensure road safety, and promote environmental integration.

Narra, a municipality in Palawan, was grappling with persistent soil erosion, which posed significant threats to critical transportation infrastructure and public safety. The natural instability of the area’s slopes, exacerbated by local terrain and climatic conditions, demanded a durable and immediate response to prevent further deterioration and ensure the safety of the region’s essential road networks.

In collaboration with BMDK Construction and Supply and the DPWH Palawan 2nd District, Maccaferri implemented a customized Active Protection System. Through the application of advanced materials and innovative engineering, the project successfully mitigated erosion, providing a sustainable and resilient solution to safeguard the slopes and infrastructure.

The Problem: Persistent Soil Erosion

Soil erosion severely impacted Narra’s transportation routes, driven by the region’s natural geographic features and climatic conditions. Without intervention, the continued erosion threatened the stability of the slopes and nearby infrastructure, creating significant risks for road users and potentially increasing maintenance costs over time.

The Solution: Maccaferri’s Active Protection System

To address the challenges, Maccaferri designed and implemented an Active Protection System, utilizing high-performance geotechnical materials that delivered exceptional results:

  • MacMat: This reinforced geomat controlled surface erosion while promoting vegetation growth for added natural stabilization.
  • Netting: High-strength netting provided structural reinforcement, securing the slopes and preventing soil displacement.

By combining these solutions, the system ensured slope stability, reduced environmental impact, and promoted long-term sustainability. The use of Maccaferri’s advanced materials not only solved the immediate erosion issues but also minimized future risks, making the area safer and more resilient to environmental challenges.

Conclusion

Maccaferri’s Active Protection System in Narra, Palawan, highlights the transformative impact of innovative geotechnical solutions in combating infrastructure challenges. By addressing soil erosion with environmentally friendly, cost-effective materials, this project not only reinforced the slopes but also set a precedent for integrating safety, sustainability, and engineering excellence in slope protection efforts.
