In celebration of Maccaferri’s 130th Gabion Anniversary, Maccaferri Philippines organized a significant coastal cleanup activity at the Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park on December 4, 2024. The event, held from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM, brought together a team of dedicated volunteers determined to address the mounting waste along the coastline—a result of recent typhoons that battered the Philippines. 
 
The cleanup posed a formidable challenge as endless amounts of trash were washed ashore. However, with resilience and teamwork, the group successfully collected a total of 104 kilograms of waste, categorized as follows: 
 
– 98 kilograms of plastic bags and wrappers (both food and non-food products), 
– 2 kilograms of plastic cups, lids, straws, and utensils, and 
– 4 kilograms of personal hygiene items such as diapers, sanitary pads, and toothbrushes. 
 
This initiative underscored the urgency of addressing plastic pollution, a critical environmental issue in the Philippines and globally. By taking action, Maccaferri Philippines reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability and environmental protection, values that have been central to the company’s mission throughout its 130-year history. 

Why the Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park Matters

The Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park is a vital ecosystem, providing a habitat for migratory birds, acting as a natural buffer against storm surges, and offering livelihood opportunities to nearby communities. Unfortunately, pollution and waste accumulation threaten its biodiversity and ecological balance. Choosing this site for cleanup was both a symbolic and practical decision, reflecting Maccaferri’s dedication to protecting critical natural environments.
