Enhancing Stability and Sustainability: Retaining Wall Solutions for Tiwi’s 17MW Binary Geothermal Power Plant
Discover how the 17MW Binary Geothermal Power Plant in Tiwi, Albay, overcame challenging terrains with Maccaferri's Terramesh® System. This innovative retaining wall solution ensures site stability, safety, and sustainability while supporting the region’s renewable energy goals.
Tiwi, Albay, a municipality renowned for its geothermal energy production, has been a significant site for harnessing renewable energy since the 1970s. The newly constructed 17MW Binary Geothermal Power Plant continues this legacy by utilizing innovative technology to maximize energy output while prioritizing sustainability. This cutting-edge facility uses residual heat from geothermal brine—a byproduct of energy production—to generate additional electricity, ensuring efficient and sustainable resource utilization. However, the project encountered significant challenges due to the site’s hilly and rocky terrain, characterized by inherent instability and susceptibility to landslides and erosion.
The Challenge: Ensuring Stability Amidst Rugged Terrain
The unstable landscape of Tiwi posed serious risks to the power plant’s infrastructure, requiring immediate and robust solutions to prevent landslides and ensure site stability. Given the critical nature of the power plant, the project needed a solution that was not only structurally sound but also aligned with its commitment to environmental stewardship.
Innovative Solution: Maccaferri’s Terramesh® System
To overcome these challenges, the project adopted Maccaferri’s Terramesh® System, an advanced retaining wall solution designed for reinforced soil structures. The system is preassembled and made from double-twisted 8×10 PoliMac®-coated steel wire mesh, offering superior durability and structural integrity.
Key benefits of the Terramesh® System include:
- Sustainability: The solution utilizes on-site materials such as rocks, reducing the need for resource transportation and minimizing carbon emissions.
- Cost Efficiency: By leveraging local resources, the project achieved significant savings in labor and equipment costs.
- Environmental Compatibility: The modular design and eco-friendly materials align with the project’s commitment to minimizing ecological disruption.
With construction spanning from January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023, the project was completed on schedule, ensuring the timely delivery of this crucial renewable energy facility.
A Model of Sustainability and Innovation
The retaining wall solution for the 17MW Binary Geothermal Power Plant demonstrates the power of innovative engineering combined with sustainable practices. By addressing the challenges of Tiwi’s rugged terrain with eco-friendly and cost-effective methods, the project sets a benchmark for future infrastructure in the renewable energy sector.
Through Maccaferri’s solutions and the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders, the Tiwi Binary Geothermal Power Plant is poised to contribute to the Philippines’ renewable energy goals while exemplifying environmental responsibility.
