CENTER FOR TECHNICAL LANDFILL OF THE NACHTIGAL DAM, CAMEROON

Problem

The Nachtigal Dam, situated on the Sanaga River, is part of a hydroelectric project by the Cameroonian government aimed at enhancing accessibility and reliability of renewable energy supply throughout the country. Equipped with seven turbines, each with a power capacity of 60 megawatts (MW), the facility will generate a total power output of 420 MW, expected to cover 30% of the country’s energy needs.

Solution

During these developments, a technical landfill site had to be constructed. At the request of the consortium ORTEC – EDF and CCN, the company France Maccaferri was involved in creating landfill cells and storage basins. Geotextiles Mactex N15.1 120 g/m², Mactex N80.1 400 g/m², and Macline SDH 150 1.5 mm were installed across the entire geosynthetic complex on the bottom and the sides. These works were carried out in 2021, and approximately 3,500m² of each product was installed.
