SAN MIGUEL BREWERY – DAVAO
Problem
San Miguel Corporation is the Philippinesā largest beverage, food and packaging company. It owns the San Miguel Brewery Inc. (SMBI), considered as the largest producer of beer in the country. One of its five breweries in the Philippines located in Davao City, Davao del Sur, is located near a coastline. Although it is a strategic location for the brewery, its perimeter along the shoreline has been subjected to continuous erosion due to wave and tidal actions. To solve the problem, SMBI required a permanent and yet cost-effective solution especially to retain the eroded portions of its perimeter.
Solution
Based on the provided data of the customer, the maximum height of waves in the area is around one meter. In this, together with other design parameters, Maccaferri engineers proposed a gabion-type wall structure combined with Reno mattress apron embedded into the sand on the seaward side of the perimeter. Maccaferri’s polymeric-coated gabions and Reno mattresses were used. The polymeric coating provides durability protection against corrosion. Due to the system’s flexibility and integrity, as well as its wave-dissipating mechanism, Maccaferriās solution has been proven effective and was approved by SMBI engineers.
