Problem

Torre de Oro Development Corporation is the developer of Pacific Landmark, a mix-use commercial complex in Macasandig, Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental, Philippines. The existing property is situated in a swampy area and was depressed by seven meters with respect to an existing national road. The finished grade of the proposed complex was designed to be at the same elevation of the road, thus backfilling was required. Since the perimeter line of the property is also adjacent to a creek, an earth retaining structures was needed to support the development.

Solution

The solution proposed by Maccaferri engineers was a mechanically-stabilized earth wall using Terramesh System. The reinforced zone of the wall was compacted to desired density (i.e. minimum 95% of MDD by Standard Proctor). After the construction, even the catastrophic Typhoon ‘Sendong’ was unable to affect the MSE wall – a proof of its superior structural integrity.
