ISLAND GARDEN CITY OF SAMAL, DAVAO DEL NORTE - REGION XI - Philippines
Filinvest Land, Inc.
KEMBALI COAST
Problem
The first Balinese-inspired leisure-residential resort developed by Filinvest Land, Inc. located in the Island Garden City of Samal is the Kembali Coast Residential Beach Resort. It is an exclusive island residential development that offers beach front lots, cliff lots and elevated or view lots. The area is located in the southern part of the Philippines. The island is prone to typhoon and the effects of the southwest monsoon that annually brings torrential rains to the region. The sands on the beach shore has been subjected to frequent erosion, thus a shoreline structure was required to address the problem.
Solution
The solution proposed by Maccaferri engineers was a gabion groin structure to protect the shoreline against beach erosion due to tidal and wave effects. With the abundance of coralline stones in the area, gabion boxes were found to be the most practical material. After the gabion groin was constructed, it has been observed that beach sands begin to nourish and accumulate, which indicated the effectivity of the solution. The groin has been subjected to typhoons and it remained strong.
