Problem

Holcim Philippines, Inc. (HPI) owns a silica quarry operation in the town of Agno, province of Pangasinan, but which was decided to be closed after several years of operation. At site, several stockpiles of silt were left exposed and during rainy season, these wastes were eroded and caused disturbances on a nearby residential area below the quarry site. HPI constructed three temporary silt trap dams to address the problem. However, the materials used in the construction of the dams were just ordinary sand bags thus the structures eventually collapsed. HPI decided to look for a more suitable material to repair the dams.

Solution

Maccaferri engineers has designed a gabion weir structure using polymeric-coated gabions. The abundance of rock fill materials in the quarry site has highlighted the economical benefits of gabions for the repair of damaged silt trap dams.
