CAVINTI, LAGUNA - REGION IV-A - Philippines

National Power Corporation

CALIRAYA

Problem

In the province of Laguna, CBK Power Company Limited (CBK PCL) operates three hydroelectric power plants. The reservoir of the power plants created the Caliraya Lake, bounded by the towns of Lumban, Kalayaan, and Cavinti. A portion of its tailrace canal, or a water channel below its dam, that serves as the main channel of water coming from the dam and also serves as the main passageway of floodwater coming from different villages leading to the Pasanjan River has collapsed and required immediate rehabilitation.

Solution

The Project Consultant, in coordination with Maccaferri, recommended a gabion gravity wall for longitudinal protection. Polymeric-coated gabions were used to ensure durability of the metallic wires exposed to water from the the tailrace canal. Installation works were awarded to a reputable contractor, which maintained the quality in workmanship. Soon enough, the project was completed before the onset of the rainy season.
