BALESIN ISLAND, POLILLO, QUEZON - REGION IV-A - Philippines

Alphaland Corporation

BALESIN ISLAND CLUB JETTY

Problem

Alphaland Corporation developed a private resort on a 424-hectare Balesin Island in Quezon province, Philippines. The island is located east of Mauban, Quezon beside the Polillo Islands and nestles at the gate of Lamon Bay, one of the richest, undisturbed fishing grounds in the Pacific. To ensure transport of construction materials as well as food supplies to the island, a docking structure was required. In this, a temporary jetty was required. Albeit temporary, the jetty must be stable enough against constant thrust of waves and effects of tides.

Solution

For the temporary jetty, Maccaferri engineers recommended a gabion structure. Abundant coralline rocks found in the island was maximized for filling of gabions. Reno mattresses were also used for scouring protection at the toe of the jetty. Beach sands were also used to fill core of the jetty structure contained by gabions. Since the jetty was partially submerged in sea water, gabions and Reno mattresses used were all polymeric-coated. To reinforce the jetty’s stability against strong waves and scouring, a stockpile of boulders was placed around its base.
