Slope Protection Measures at Guras Kutir Panthang, Gangtok
To mitigate the surficial erosion and instability, Maccaferri’s secured drapery system was installed over the erosion control mats to protect the slope.
Erosion Control measures at the Guras Kutir Panthang, Gangtok, Sikkim were installed for slope protection and surface strengthening.
Gangtok in Sikkim, India is a hilly terrain which predominantly comprises of natural slopes where stability is a concern. Ambuja Realty Development Ltd wanted to protect Guras Kutir resort, located in the Pangthang village, Gangtok. The site is situated on a hill slope having multiple unstable locations which were highly susceptible to slope failure. The major challenges of the project included the weak soil and the limited space availability at the toe of the slope due to which deep cut sections were provided.
Maccaferri’s slope protection and erosion control measures were applied on the cut slope sections using MacMat® R (steel reinforced synthetic geomats) combined with hydraulically applied erosion control products (HECPs). Soil nails were installed on the embankment slope to provide surficial stability.
The system proposed provides surficial strengthening, reduces erosion and promotes the growth of vegetation on the exposed cut portions for long term protection. These solutions are conforming to MoRTH – Specifications for Road & Bridge Works (5th Revision) and IRC: 56. The successful germination has started within few weeks and grasses have been visible on the treated slope. Proper maintenance of the treated areas was mandatory to ensure the effectiveness of the system.
