Rockfall Protection and Stabilization works in Helang, Uttarakhand

In 2013, a major cloud burst had resulted in landslides causing widespread loss of life and property and Ministry of Road Transport and Highways decided to undertake rehabilitation of the landslide locations.

Erosion of the slope due to heavy rainfall resulted in the movement of overburden soil present on hill as well as valley slope.Maccaferri’s simple drapery system with steel wire mesh geocomposite along with top anchors and bottom anchors and rockfall barrier was provided as a solution.

Landslides in Himalaya is a perennial problem. Ministry of Road Transport and Highways decided to undertake rehabilitation/mitigation of the landslide locations with slope protection and drainage improvement measures at the site of Helang in the hilly state of Uttarakhand.

The area consisted of a 50 m stretch of fractured rockmass units having unfavorable dipping towards the valley side. The Main Central Thrust (MCT) also passed from this area making it more vulnerable and unstable. The site was on a highly active seismic Zone V. To protect this stretch, simple drapery system with steel wire mesh geocomposite along with 5 to 8m long top anchors and bottom anchors 3m long, were provided. At the natural drain locations rockfall barrier was installed for protection against debris flow which may happen during rains.

The rockfall protection and stabilization works in Helang were a challenging task due to involvement of complexity in terms of geology, terrain, climatic conditions and construction difficulties. The solutions adopted were easily and rapidly constructible, resilient to seismic activities and environment friendly.
