Advanced rockfall mitigation using HEA Panels and Steelgrid meshes ensures safety and uninterrupted rail operations in challenging terrain.

The Dudhnoi–Mendipathar railway line in Assam, developed by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), passes through highly challenging terrain characterized by steep and near-vertical cut slopes formed to minimize excavation. While this approach reduced construction time and efforts, it introduced a significant risk of rockfalls along multiple sections of the track. Falling rocks posed a continuous threat to train operations, passenger safety and overall infrastructure reliability. The challenge was further intensified by the extremely limited space available between the slope face and the railway track, which made it difficult to adopt traditional rockfall protection systems that rely on debris collection zones. Ensuring effective slope stabilization without obstructing the railway envelope became a critical requirement for the project. 

To overcome these constraints, an advanced rockfall mitigation system was implemented using High Energy Absorption (HEA) Panels and Steelgrid meshes. These high-strength systems were designed to provide superior stiffness and minimal deflection, enabling them to effectively contain and control falling debris at the slope face. The meshes and panels were securely anchored using self-drilling anchors (SDA) installed at the top, intermediate and bottom sections of the slope, ensuring comprehensive coverage and stability. This solution not only addressed the space limitations but also delivered a durable and reliable protection system, ensuring safe and uninterrupted railway operations in a challenging environment.
