Rockfall Mitigation & Slope Protection Measures-Himachal Pradesh

Rockfall barriers of capacity 2000kJ and 5000 kJ were installed to mitigate the risk of rock detachments from upslope locations.

Maccaferri successfully completed the installation of its rockfall mitigation solutions Pangi Bridge on NH-22, Himachal Pradesh, India. These effective solutions were installed at a critical location of the stretch which was prone to frequent rockfall intendents.

Maccaferri‘s rockfall mitigation and slope protection solutions were adopted by Border Road Organization (BRO) near the approach road to the Pangi Bridge on NH-22 (old Hindustan-Tibet Road) in Himachal Pradesh. Due to the presence of unstable rock mass, subsurface water flow and surficial instability at the Pangi nallah, the functioning of national highway was affected, and the safety of Civilians, the army and BRO was a constant concern. Necessary engineering investigations were conducted to cover the 130 meters stretch affected by multiple slide/ rockfall incidents in the past.

Dynamic rockfall barrier with energy capacity of 2000kJ and 5000 kJ were installed for 450 meters stretch (in multiple lines) at various stipulated locations. Based on rockfall simulations and trajectory analyses performed, to mitigate the risk of rock detachments from the upslope locations. Slope protection system with high-tensile wire mesh (SteelGrid® HR), Jute erosion control mat (BioMac® JU) and surface nailing were installed to counter surficial instability and erosion concerns. To cater the subsurface water flow, PVC perforated pipes were installed.
