Rockfall Barriers at South Western Railway – Mysore Division
Rockfall protection measures were implemented in the South Western Railway - Mysore Division wherever rockfall events were observed from the crest.
Rockfall barriers with a capacity of 1500 kJ were installed to mitigate the risk of rock detachments from upslope locations.
South Western Railway (SWR) identified multiple locations with rockfall incidents along the Mysore Division route in Karnataka, India. This route traverses rocky terrain, primarily near the southern Deccan Plateau and the Western Ghats. Rockfall incidents were observed from upslope areas, posing a potential risk to the railway track, rail cars, and tunnel portals.
To address these challenges, Maccaferri’s dynamic rockfall barriers, with a capacity of 1500 kJ and a height of 5 meters, were installed at three critical locations: the Sakleshpura-Subrahmanya Road station (near the tunnel portal), Donigal-Kadagaravalli stations, and Shiribagilu-Subrahmanya Road stations. These barriers are EAD-certified, conforming to both national and international standards, ensuring their effectiveness in containing rock detachments and preventing them from reaching the tracks.
The barriers feature a braking system that maintains performance throughout their design life and allows for easy visual inspection by maintenance engineers, as they progressively deform upon impact. Precautions were taken during the loose scaling and installation processes to ensure normal train traffic remained unaffected.
