Rockfall Barriers at Patalganga Valley, Uttarakhand

Rockfall mitigations measures were installed at Patalganga valley is located in Northwestern Himalayan region of Garhwal, Uttarakhand.

Rockfall barriers of capacity 3000kJ were installed to mitigate the risk of rock detachments from upslope locations.

After the flash floods of 2013 in Uttarakhand, NH-58 was severely damaged and multiple stretches were under constant threat of human safety and infrastructure damage. Due to the presence of unstable rock mass, high rainfall in the region and various anthropogenic activities, the functioning of the national highway was affected, and slopes were highly susceptible to failure. Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) decided to rehabilitate the Patalganga valley which is in the North-western Himalayan region of Garhwal. The project was executed by National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).

Maccaferri’s rockfall barriers system was installed to mitigate the risk of rocks detachment from the upslope locations. Detailed site investigation and engineering were done to identify four critical locations. Dynamic rockfall barriers of 3000-kJ capacity and height 5 m were employed for the stretch of 50 m at each identified location. The barrier’s installation location varied from 30m- 60 m above the bottom road based on trajectory analyses.
