Riverbank Protection Works at Narmada River, Madhya Pradesh
The Water Resource Department (WRD) Jabalpur adopted Maccaferri’s polymer coated erosion control mattresses as launching aprons and gabion walls for toe protection measure.
Hirapur Bhatera Ghat, located on the right bank of Narmada River flowing through Narsinghpur district in Madhya Pradesh was facing severe bank erosion during the monsoon season. Consequently, there was insufficient land available for construction of the ghat. Water Resource Department (WRD) Jabalpur decided to protect the riverbank. Maccaferri’s flexible and sustainable solutions were adopted as these are economical, environmentally friendly and have proven durability over 130 years, making them ideal for long term protection as compared to conventional methods.
Maccaferri’s sustainable riverbank protection solutions were installed up to 19 meters above the riverbed level. Polymer coated gabion mattresses were installed on the slope of the riverbank and on the riverbed as launching aprons for scour protection. MacTex N (non-woven geotextile) was used at the bottom of the mattress for separation and filtration purposes. A 3.5-meter-high gabion cut-off wall was provided as toe protection. Additionally, at multiple locations, staircases were constructed using gabion and mattresses for public movements.
Benefits:
• Gabion and mattress with Zinc + PVC coating were used to provide long term durability and make it more flexible to the impact.
• The PVC coated mesh ensures that the strength is not compromised by chemical, biological or environmental degradation.
• Gabion and mattress can prevent the surface erosion and the scour action.
