RETENTION WORKS FOR YADAGIRI GUTTA TEMPLE

Maccaferri’s Paramesh system was adopted to maintain the retention height up to 40m in hilly terrain while preserving the architectural integrity of the temple.

The Yadagiri Temple Development Association (YTDA) and the Roads and Building Department, Hyderabad adopted Maccaferri’s Paramesh system, a modular system designed to perform under high loads and has a life of up to 120 years for retention works.

Yadagirigutta Temple is one of the most ancient temples situated in the Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana, India. Recognizing its spiritual significance, the Yadagiri Temple Development Association (YTDA) and the Roads & Building Department of Hyderabad planned to expand its premises to accommodate more pilgrims and make it one of the largest temples. Initially, conventional RCC structure retaining walls were thought of. However, due to the high cost and aim to minimize the use of cement, Maccaferri’s Paramesh reinforced soil wall with a height up to 40 meters was adopted for retention works.

Paramesh system is a combination of modular Terramesh® units (gabion facia with integrated tail) reinforced with ParaLink® (monoaxial geogrids) as primary reinforcement to increase the stability of the slope. It is designed to perform under high loads and has a life of up to 120 years. Additionally, MacTex® geotextile was used for separation and filtration purposes, while MacDrain® drainage geocomposite ensured effective drainage management. To manage water drainage, longitudinal and transverse perforated PVC pipes (160mm in diameter) wrapped in geotextile were used to collect and drain surface and subsurface runoff to the main drains. Additionally, at the interface of insitu strata and structural soil, a drainage composite is provided to dissipate the pore water pressure developed and to assist the flow of seeping water.
