Reinforced Soil Structure at Tribhuwan International Airport, Nepal
Maccaferri’s Paramesh system, a modular system was considered for its flexibility, high load bearing capacity and economy.
Maccaferri’s reinforced soil system was adopted by civil aviation authority for expanding the apron at Tribhuwan International Airport, Nepal.
The Civil Aviation Authority Nepal, Civil Engineering Division at Tribhuwan International Airport planned to expand its apron by constructing two additional bays at the southside of bay no. 1 of the international airport as the existing apron was unable to serve the current traffic. The vertical difference between the existing apron level and ground level is 12 meters. Therefore, Maccaferri’s Paramesh system reinforced soil (RS) structure was considered for its flexibility, high load bearing capacity and economy in comparison to a conventional structure.
Paramesh system is a combination of modular Terramesh® units (gabion facia with integrated tail) reinforced with ParaLink® (monoaxial geogrids) as primary reinforcement to increase the stability of the slope. MacTex® geotextile was used for separation and filtration at the backside of the Terramesh®. MacDrain® geocomposite was installed as a drainage layer. The RS structure was also used to construct a ramp from the top of the newly constructed apron to reach a 3-meter height at the top of the existing bay for free movement of trolleys and luggage.
