Pavement Strengthening at Airforce Station, West Bengal

Maccaferri’s MacGrid® AR was installed as an asphalt reinforcement to reduce reflective cracking, surface rutting and for pavement strengthening. MacGrid® AR is biaxial glass-fiber geogrid used to extend the life of flexible pavements.

The entry road to the Airforce station at Kalaikunda, West Bengal was experiencing a severe problem of interconnected cracks due to the increased traffic. The existing pavement had developed surface cracks that had further deteriorated into large potholes. To address the issue, the MES Kharagpur decided to opt for a durable solution.

The solution involved repairing the damaged pavement by placing an asphalt layer to increase the load-carrying capacity of the section. This would enable it to withstand the design traffic and provide the required serviceability. However, a geosynthetic interlayer can be placed over the distressed pavement prior to the overlay to create an economical and long-lasting overlay system.

Conventionally overlaying is done to repair the effected surface, however it is not the most durable solution as the cracks under the overlay will propagate through the new surface. MacGrid® AR glass grid reinforcement was opted over conventional solution to increase the life of the pavement by increasing the load bearing capacity of the pavement section. The solution involves placement of geosynthetic interlayer between distressed pavement and new overlay to relief the stress.   

We offer a range of reinforcement products for bituminous paving. Whereas MacGrid® AR glass fiber and polyester geogrids inhibit reflective cracking, Road Mesh® additionally structurally reinforces the pavement. Road Mesh® provides lateral restraint to the asphalt, which improves resistance to rutting and shoving.
