Hydraulic Solutions for Riverbank Protection at Kalughat, Bihar
Maccaferri delivered a sustainable riverbank protection solution for the Kalughat Project in Bihar, safeguarding a 600 m stretch of the River Ganga embankment from flood-induced erosion and riverbed scouring.
Maccaferri protects the Kalughat embankment in Bihar with Hydraulic solutions preventing erosion, scour, and slope instability.
The Kalughat project, situated along the River Ganga in Saran District, Bihar, forms part of an important inland waterway development. The site experiences a significant variation in water level, ranging from a low water level of 42.40 m to a high flood level of 52.50 m relative to mean sea level. During monsoon and flood conditions, the embankment was vulnerable to riverbank erosion and riverbed scouring, which could result in the loss of bank material and slope instability, compromising the long-term performance of the embankment. Considering the risks associated with flood-induced erosion, bank instability and riverbed scour, a sustainable and resilient slope protection solution was required to safeguard the embankment and enhance long-term infrastructure resilience.
Maccaferri provided an advanced riverbank protection solution using Reno Mattress (gabion mattress) to protect a 600 m stretch of riverbank from flood-induced erosion while enhancing slope stability and long-term serviceability. Reno Mattress of 0.23 m thickness was installed along the embankment slope, supported by gabion units at the toe to improve stability and resistance against hydraulic action. To address riverbed scouring, a 21 m long launching apron made of 0.23 m thick Reno Mattress was provided beyond the toe, helping prevent undermining of the bank protection system during changing flow conditions. Nonwoven geotextile was also used below the Reno Mattress as a filter layer, supporting proper filtration and durability. Compared to conventional riprap, the solution offered ease of installation, lower maintenance requirements and improved sustainability, while its permeable nature supported drainage and vegetation growth. The project demonstrates how engineered hydraulic solutions can strengthen river embankments through sustainable erosion control and long-term resilience.
