Ground Improvement Work at Barasat, West Bengal

Maccaferri’s ParaLink™ as basal reinforcement (as per MORTH 3100 and IRC 113) was installed to ensure proper distribution of the load from the superstructure to the subsoil and to reduce differential settlement.

Maccaferri’s Geogrid ground improvement solutions were used to curb the excessive settlements and pavement strengthening.

National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) planned to upgrade the 2-lane road to a 4-lane stretch from Krishna Nagar to Barasat on NH-34 in West Bengal. The section faced challenges due to its soft-clayey foundation soil, which was prone to waterlogging, capillary rise and excessive settlement. These issues resulted in cracks, depressions, and increasing maintenance costs. Initially, a conventional rock fill solution was approved for the project which involved higher costs and greater environmental footprint. To make the project economical and sustainable, Maccaferri proposed advanced geosynthetic solutions to contractor to curb the excessive settlements and pavement damages.

Maccaferri’s ground improvement solutions were selected over conventional methods due to their ease of installation, cost-effectiveness and sustainable benefits. ParaLink® (monoaxial geogrid) was installed as basal reinforcement to distribute loads from the superstructure to reduce differential settlement, while MacDrain® (drainage geocomposite) acted as a capillary cutoff. MacTex® N (non-woven geotextile) served as a separator and filtration layer between in-situ soil and the granular layer, ensuring long-term stability and reduced maintenance.
