Ground Improvement Solutions for Agartala-Akhaura Rail Link

Maccaferri’s MacDrain® V was used replacing conventional drainage layer of sand/gravel to accelerate the consolidation of the soil. A layer of ParaLink® was laid for rotational stability and load distribution.

Ground Improvement using Prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) solutions were installed at the Agartala- Akhaura rail link to increase railway connectivity.

The Agartala-Akhaura rail project aims to connect Agartala, the capital city of Tripura, with Akhaura, a town in Bangladesh. The 15 km long railway line improves connectivity between the northeastern states of India and Bangladesh, enhancing trade and tourism in the region.

The major challenge faced by Ircon International Limited (IRCON) during project implementation was the construction of railway formation on very soft clayey soil, along with some decomposed wood. Maccaferri’s ground improvement solutions were adopted to increase the load-bearing capacity of the soil.

Prefabricated Vertical Drain was installed to accelerate the consolidation of the soft soil along with the BBA certified ParaLink® (high-strength geogrid) as basal reinforcement to ensure uniform stress distribution and minimizing differential settlement. MacDrain® (drainage geocomposite) was used to replace the conventional gravel drainage layer.
