Erosion Control Measures at Hindalco’s Mine, Muri, Jharkhand
At Hindalco's Muri Mine in Jharkhand, an extensive area of 30,000 sqm was treated with Hydraulically Applied Erosion Control materials and various agronomic amendments.
Maccaferri’s hydraulically applied erosion control measures and agronomic amendments effectively protect the slope from erosion of red mud.
The Hindalco Industries Limited (HIL) plant in Muri, Jharkhand was facing a major problem: erosion of red mud, a by-product of the aluminium extraction process. The dumped red mud was getting eroded due to surface runoff flow, causing severe environmental pollution in the surrounding areas. Additionally, the high alkalinity and salinity of the red mud were limiting vegetation / plant growth.
To address the problem, vegetative measures were required to be undertaken. To protect the slope from erosion, Maccaferri used a combination of Hydraulically Applied Erosion Control Products (HECP) – MacFlex, MacGanics, and other agronomic amendments such as AquapHix, Jumpstart, and Bioprime, over an area of 30,000 sqm. The soil was tested for agronomic properties like: pH, vegetative matter, nutrients etc. Based on the test results required amendments were considered in stipulated dosages along with appropriate plant species.
The seed species were selected based on the pH, climate, availability of local seeds, and discussion with a horticulturist. The quantities of materials were finalized before mixing in hydroseeder along with seeds and water in a two-step process. The slurry obtained after mixing was sprayed over the slope surface, and maintenance was done by spraying water over it to avoid drying.
