Erosion Control Measures at Alamnagar Bypass Railway Line

Maccaferri’s hydraulically applied erosion control measures and Rolled Erosion Control Products and BioMaterials were applied on the slope hydraulically to promote vegetation growth.

Maccaferri’s sustainable geosynthetic solutions were adopted by Northern Railways (NR) on the Alamnagar bypass railway line of the Lucknow division, Uttar Pradesh, India. The backfill soil used to construct the embankment had very little biotic ingredient, resulting in no vegetation growth. Consequently, the slope was exposed to erosive agents such as water, gravity and wind. Northern Railways wanted to protect the embankment side slope from soil erosion using innovative and eco-friendly solutions.

Adopted soil erosion prevention measures consist of a combination of Hydraulically applied Erosion Control Products (HECPs) followed by Rolled Erosion Control Products (RECPs). Initially, a trial was carried out for required soil amendments (nutrients, pH balancing agents) and seed selection. After successful verification of the performance, the solution was adopted at three different locations. For HECPs, agronomic tests were conducted, and Maccaferri’s BioMaterials were applied on the slope hydraulically to promote vegetation growth. For RECP, steel reinforced geomat- MacMat® R was installed on the slope of the embankment, providing the environment for vegetation growth and acting as reinforcement for the roots of the vegetation, which protects the slope from erosion. The combination of solutions offered is one of the cost-effective and long-term performance methods of retaining both soil and moisture on the slope, thereby promoting sustainable vegetation for long-term erosion protection.
