Rockfall protection for Indian heritage sites – Shri Ram Laxman Gad Mandir

Mitigation of threats to human life and infrastructure with Maccaferri’s Rockfall protection solutions

Rockfall hazard poses a great threat to human life and infrastructure. One such challenging project undertaken by Maccaferri India was for the ancient Shri Ram Laxman Gad Mandir (Temple) near Nagpur, Maharashtra.

The steep slope, on which the temple is situated is folded and faulted. The continuous seepage of water into the exposed weathered rocks, varying temperature, precipitation and steep gradient of slope had triggered rockfall incidents in the past. These problems along with highly undulated slope face had made the site critical and challenging.

Our Rockfall mitigation system in the form of a mesh system comprising of Steelgrid HR and diagonal wire ropes, Steelgrid MO and HEA Panel along with deep anchoring on slopes using continuously threaded anchors as surface nails, were provided as a secured drapery system combined with proper drainage arrangements.

This proved to be an ideal solution for the project after a cautious assessment of the risk probability and overall cost compared to the conventional measures such as shotcreting and rigid gravity wall etc. Keeping in mind the importance and age of the temple, vibration monitoring was done at various locations in the temple premises using the seismograph.
