Natural Disaster Mitigation Solutions for Hilly Terrain: Kedarnath in Uttarakhand

Hilly terrains are frequently affected by debris flow due to rainfall & soil boulder strata; hence posing a threat to human life and infrastructure.

One such challenging project undertaken by Maccaferri India comprised of debris flow mitigation works near the Kedarnath Temple in Uttarakhand situated at an altitude of 11,700ft from MSL (Mean Sea Level).

The locality near the holy shrine involves a high level of danger every monsoon season due to the flow of loose overburden material (debris flow) with water. The problem required a solution that could be implemented manually as equipment like an air compressor is not operable at such high altitudes. The lack of a motorable road to transport any heavy equipment until Kedarnath increased the complexity of the project.

Umbrella type units that have been developed for emergency measures to contain debris flow or rebuild failed slopes, proved to be an ideal solution for the project after a judicious assessment of risk probability and maintenance costs. Our system offers strength and performance without the aesthetic intrusion, along with being quick and simple to install.
