Maintenance of Rockfall Mitigation Solutions at Mumbai Pune Expressway

Maintenance is an imperative post installation activity that is necessary for the continued effective performance of the installed rockfall mitigation measures.

In addition to being the solution provider of choice, Maccaferri is consistently engaged with its customers to ensure the sustained performance of its solutions. One such project is the Mumbai Pune Expressway that witness numerous incidents of rockfall, landslide and subsidence, requiring regular maintenance of the rockfall drapery.

The Yashwantrao Chavan Mumbai Pune Expressway (popularly known as the Mumbai Pune Expressway) connecting Mumbai with Pune is India’s first six-lane concrete, high-speed, access-controlled expressway. There have been reported incidents of rockfall, landslide and subsidence at a few locations along the Mumbai-Pune expressway during the monsoon season. These frequent incidences cause disruption of traffic and loss of life. MSRDC (Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation) initiated rockfall mitigation measures on the weathered basaltic rocky slopes along the expressway. Maccaferri was involved in design, supply and execution of rockfall mitigation measures near Adoshi tunnel, Khandala tunnel, and Amrutanjan bridge.

Maintenance is one of the pertinent post installation activities that is inevitable for the continued effective performance of the installed rockfall mitigation measures. The maintenance of drapery system primarily comprises of inspection of any detachments of rocks behind the drapery system on a regular basis and repair/replacement of affected components as per requirement. The regular monitoring of the various elements of the dynamic rockfall barrier was carried out along with the inspection of interception panels made up of steel mesh, cleaning of accumulated rock/debris.
