Maccaferri’s Solutions for Construction of Landfills

Worldwide, the disposal of waste materials is an increasing problem which demands greater landfill capacity. It is important to recognize that a landfill is not just a ‘dump’ for waste, but a living organism, bringing constantly changing engineering challenges. Construction of landfills is an important activity to ensure proper disposal of waste materials. It is necessary to take into consideration the protection of the native ground from contamination by waste materials as well as maximizing space to hold large quantities of waste. 

Use of geogrids to reinforce soil, enables the steepening of slopes within landfill cells, maximizing the volumes available for waste disposal. MacLine® impermeable liners contain, cap and protect pollution from contained waste material and MacMat® limits erosion from the slopes of these installations. MacDrain® drainage geomposites drain fluids (liquids or gases) from landfills. 

A landfill has a dumping capacity of 13,00,000 cum was constructed in Gyaspur, Ahmedabad (Gujarat). MacLine® geomembrane of total area 90,000 sqm of was supplied to cover the bottom and the four slopes of the landfill of height 50 m. This geomembrane contains 97.5% polyethylene & 2.5% carbon black content and has good environment crack resistance. MacLine® was able to perform its intended function.
