Maccaferri successfully installed its ETA certified rockfall barrier at Teesta Urja’s Mangan Powerhouse in Sikkim
Maccaferri successfully completed this turnkey project by installing its dynamic rockfall barriers of 5,000 kJ capacity featuring a unique, patented, compression braking system. This energy absorption device is a simple, yet effective mechanism because it maintains performance throughout the entire design life of the structure.
A rockfall barrier of 7 meters height was installed over a length of 330 meters. Out of this, 230 meters was installed at the dam site at Chungthang and 100 meters at the Mangan Powerhouse site. A secured drapery system was also installed as rockfall protection at Teesta Stage-III.
The project tenure was from March 2021 to February 2022 and some major challenges faced during project execution were rugged & hilly terrain and limited working hours due to unseasonal rainfall. Maccaferri executed the project on turnkey basis. Barriers were installed at 40-80 meters above the road levels and special arrangements were made to lift the material at such heights for successful completion of project.
In similar situations where it may not be practical to install rockfall drapery protection, due to technical, topographic, or economic issues, Maccaferri’s dynamic rockfall barriers are provided on the slope face which offer economic and robust solution to rockfall protection.
