Wheatley Bridge Transpennine Route Upgrade
Challenge
As part of the installation of a new overbridge on the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), temporary works were required to facilitate ongoing construction activities. The sequencing of the permanent works meant that a section of retaining structure was needed to stabilise the area and maintain safe working conditions while additional elements of the project were completed. Without a suitable temporary retaining solution in place, progress on the overbridge installation and associated works would have been delayed, potentially impacting programme timelines and site logistics. The solution needed to be robust, compliant with highway and rail standards, and capable of remaining in place until the permanent retaining structure could be constructed.
Solution
Maccaferri collaborated closely with the TRU West Alliance temporary works team to develop an effective and efficient temporary retaining wall solution. A system suggestion was provided free of charge, based on the Gabion TerraMesh system, which holds a BBA HAPAS certification, offering assurance of performance and compliance for use in infrastructure projects.
To support the formal design process, Maccaferri supplied detailed calculations and CAD drawings to the appointed consulting engineer, who undertook the structural design of the wall. This collaborative approach ensured that the proposed solution met the technical requirements of the project while aligning with the alliance’s programme and construction methodology.
The temporary retaining wall enabled critical construction activities to continue safely and efficiently until the permanent works solution could be installed. Materials were supplied by Scott Parnell, and installation of the retaining wall was carried out by BAM as part of the TRU West Alliance, demonstrating effective coordination across the supply chain to deliver a practical and timely temporary works solution.
