WAITROSE JOHN LEWIS

Problem

A new landmark store for the John Lewis Partnership to house both the John Lewis and Waitrose brands. Developed in partnership with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, the new store will deliver over 75,500 ft2 (net) of retail space for Waitrose and John Lewis at Home, and a new café, representing a significant boost to Basingstoke’s retail offer.

Solution

Maccaferri were instrumental in the design and construction of over 1,000sq metres of gabion façade on a new John Lewis & Waitrose Joint Store in Basingstoke which is part of £200 million regeneration scheme on M3 corridor. Work began on summer 2015 with a flag-ship John Lewis & Waitrose combined store at Basingstoke. The store is only the third co-located development in the history of the John Lewis Partnership. Covering 46,000 sq ft, the John Lewis “at home” store is the largest to date with an investment by the retailer of £6M. Coupled to a 26,000 sq ft Waitrose supermarket, this combined store created over 359 retail jobs and will be the closest store for many shoppers in north-east Hampshire and west Surrey. Bowmer and Kirkland were the main contractor appointed by Muse Developments (Basingstoke and Dean Borough Council’s Development Partner) to construct the 110,000 sq ft development. This enterprise offers 73,000 sq ft of retail floor space within a £200 million regeneration scheme which will deliver around 650,000 sq ft of new commercial led development over 15 acres.
