Problem
The St Ives railway car park sits next to an exposed rock face near the Cornwall coast of St Ives, in the South of Cornwall. The rock face of the car park embankment was due to essential repairs as it had deteriorated implicating the signs of serious structural instability in places. The embankment height ranged from 12m & 16m. Cormac instigated the stabilization works with help from the John Grimes Partnership, Carnon Contracting and Maccaferri. The embankment needed a stabilization system to protect the car park, pedestrians and the vehicles below from potential rockfall hazards.
Solution
Maccaferri were the recommended solution provider and supplied the Steelgrid HR 30 PVC mesh rockfall protection system. This system entails a high-strength stiff mesh with high tensile strength and high punch load capacity, which is secured to the rock face by bolting steel HR anchor plates, U-bolts and mesh connectors. Carnon Contracting completed extensive essential repairs and stabilization works to the embankment face in summer 2018, on behalf of Cormac.
A total of 485no ground anchorages have been drilled into the rock face to secure the surface to more stable layers beneath. The installation of the Steelgrid HR Kit, cables and plates along with areas of corbelling at lower levels has completed the stabilization project. Carnon sprayed concrete also on some of the anchors to prevent further deterioration on the upper part of the embankment.
