Rockfall Protection System at Catalan Bay, Gibraltar
Challenge
The eastern slopes of the Rock of Gibraltar, formerly used as a water catchment area, have a well-documented history of frequent and hazardous rockfall events. These natural occurrences have posed a significant risk to both infrastructure and public safety over many years.
Catalan Bay, located along Gibraltar’s eastern coastline, is home to the territory’s only sandy beach and is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. However, the road leading to the bay, particularly near the junction of the area’s only car park, has been repeatedly affected by falling rocks. This created an ongoing safety concern, with the potential for injury, road closures, and disruption to one of Gibraltar’s key recreational areas.
Due to the increasing frequency of rockfall incidents and the importance of maintaining safe access to Catalan Bay, a reliable and durable rockfall protection solution was required.
Solution
To mitigate the risk of rockfall at Catalan Bay, a robust rockfall protection system was designed and installed. The solution consists of fixed galvanised heavy steel H-beams combined with Maccaferri HEA panels suspended between the structural supports. This configuration forms a high-strength barrier capable of intercepting and containing falling rocks before they reach the roadway.
While the system does not carry the formal certification of a fully dynamic rockfall barrier, such as Maccaferri’s RB rockfall barrier range, the HEA panels used in this project are known for their exceptional dynamic impact resistance. This makes them highly effective in hybrid barrier applications where both strength and flexibility are required.
The performance of Maccaferri HEA panels has been independently validated by the Transport Research Board (TRB) in the United States. In Transportation Research Circular E-C141 (October 2009), the panels were identified as the leading solution for hybrid barrier systems, demonstrating superior impact resistance and reliability compared to alternative products.
