Rock Slope Stabilisation at Hydrocarbon Processing Facility
Challenge
A hydrocarbon processing facility was facing significant geotechnical challenges due to unstable rock slopes threatening critical infrastructure, including electrical systems and hydrocarbon transport installations. The site geology consists of closely interbedded Midland Valley Carboniferous sandstones and mudstones, which are highly friable and prone to weathering.
Over time, natural weathering processes exploited pervasive joint sets within the rock mass, leading to progressive slope instability. This resulted in frequent rockfall hazards, including large block failures measuring up to 2m x 2m x 3m. These failures posed serious safety risks, increased maintenance concerns, and threatened the operational continuity of the facility.
Solution
A comprehensive rock slope stabilisation solution was implemented to mitigate rockfall risks and protect key assets. The project began with controlled de-scaling operations carried out by specialist contractor CAN, removing loose and unstable rock blocks to reduce immediate hazards.
To reinforce the slopes, crest and toe stabilisation cables were installed, improving overall structural integrity. The rock faces were then secured using a continuous curtain of PVC-coated rockfall netting, designed to contain falling debris and prevent impact on sensitive infrastructure.
Additional surface stabilisation and erosion control were achieved using MacMat R®, applied across both soil and rock slopes to enhance long-term durability. For areas identified as high-risk, particularly zones with intense jointing and proximity to critical installations, an enhanced protection system was introduced. These sections were reinforced with high-strength HEA panels, providing increased resistance to large block failures.
This integrated rockfall protection system delivered a robust, long-term slope stabilisation solution, ensuring safety, protecting infrastructure, and maintaining operational efficiency at the facility.
