Reinforced Soil Solutions for M8, M73 & M74 Motorway Improvements

Challenge

The Scottish Government launched a major infrastructure initiative to complete the Central Scotland motorway network, focusing on the M8, M73, and M74 corridors. This strategic road improvement scheme aimed to eliminate the long-standing missing link between Edinburgh and Glasgow, one of the busiest transport routes in Scotland.

A key challenge was the reliance on the A8 through North Lanarkshire, which acted as a bottleneck, causing congestion, increased travel times, and reduced network efficiency. To address this, the project required the construction of a new 7-mile Õ°Õ¡Õ¿Õ¾Õ¡Õ® of the M8 motorway, designed to replace the A8 and create a continuous, high-capacity motorway connection.

The scale of the motorway construction project introduced significant engineering and logistical challenges, including complex ground conditions, environmental considerations, and the need to minimise disruption to local communities. In addition, the project needed to meet modern sustainability standards while delivering long-term durability and performance.

Solution

The motorway improvement project was awarded through a competitive procurement process to Scottish Roads Partnership (SRP), a consortium comprising Ferrovial Agroman and Lagan as the construction joint venture. Maccaferri was selected as a key supplier, responsible for delivering advanced reinforcing systems for the project.

This scheme became one of the first major road construction projects in Scotland to implement Building Information Modelling (BIM). The use of BIM technology enabled enhanced 3D design coordination, improved construction efficiency, and reduced project risks, positioning the project at the forefront of digital engineering in civil infrastructure.

Sustainability and environmental responsibility were central to the project’s success. Approximately 95% of construction waste was recycled, significantly reducing environmental impact. A comprehensive community engagement strategy ensured minimal disruption, while also supporting local charities, education initiatives, and providing valuable training and employment opportunities within the region.

Maccaferri supplied materials and technical expertise for several large-scale reinforced soil slope and slope stabilisation systems. Working closely with the design engineer, Amey Edinburgh, Maccaferri delivered tailored geotechnical solutions to meet the project’s demanding requirements.

The construction works included over 5,000m² of reinforced soil slopes, reaching heights of up to 15 metres. These slopes were built using the Green Terramesh® system combined with Paragrid geogrids. Green Terramesh® is a high-performance reinforced soil system featuring BBA-certified double twist steel mesh with a 120-year design life. Its rapid-install fascia includes biodegradable matting, allowing natural vegetation growth and delivering an environmentally friendly green finish at steep slope angles of up to 70 degrees.

Paragrid geogrids were used as the primary soil reinforcement solution, providing high strength and long-term stability. Additional infrastructure works included the widening and upgrading of the M73 and M74 connections, as well as the construction of a new underpass at the Raith Interchange. At this location, Macmat® R erosion control mats were installed in combination with soil nailing techniques to ensure effective slope stabilisation.

The successful delivery of the M8, M73, and M74 motorway improvements has significantly enhanced transport connectivity between Edinburgh and Glasgow. By removing a critical bottleneck and introducing modern, durable infrastructure, the project supports economic growth, improves journey times, and increases road network resilience.

Through the integration of BIM technology, reinforced soil engineering solutions, and sustainable construction practices, this project stands as a benchmark for future motorway developments in the UK and beyond.
