NEW STREET RESURFACING

Problem

New Street in Henley-on-Thames is one of the main direct routes through the town from the Northwest of the town across Henley Bridge over the River Thames to the East of the town. It is subject to heavy traffic conditions as a result.

In July 2022 carriageway maintenance works were being undertaken to repair the badly failing asphalt surface over the historic road, which is flanked on either side by stone setts.

Oxfordshire County Council were seeking to extend the design life of the new asphalt overlay by incorporating a geocomposite asphalt reinforcement geogrid below the overlay to prevent reflective cracking through the new pavement.

Solution

Oxfordshire County Council had appointed Aggregate Industries as surfacing contractor for the project and they approached Maccaferri’s specialist asphalt reinforcement installation partner Triplex Progrid to install a suitable asphalt reinforcement product.

Mactex C7 10s was selected as the asphalt reinforcement owing to its multifunction properties as reinforcement, interlayer barrier and stress relieving membrane in accordance with BS EN 15381:2008.

Using asphalt reinforcement on this pavement will have many advantages which include reduced pavement fatigue, reduced reflective cracking and reduced lifecycle costs. Mactex C7 10s is an exceptionally strong grid reinforcement and it can extend pavement life up to a factor of 5, making it cost-effective whilst reducing the carbon footprint by extending the time between maintenance intervals.

Mactex C7 10s is a high-strength geocomposite used for reinforcing asphalt pavements. It consists of a glass fibre woven knitted geogrid combined with a nonwoven filtering geotextile, to obtain a product suitable for reinforcement applications.

MacTex® C7 10s has been developed for asphalt pavement reinforcement in highways, airports and industrial pavements.
