Problem
Rochdale is embarking on industry expansion at Kingsway Business Park. A site extension includes 630,000 sq ft of logistics space for a multi-million pound JD Sports distribution centre.
The extension is to have four mezzanine levels, which will increase the warehouse capacity to nearly two million sq ft. Around the site, there needed to be reinforced walls to secure the embankments and screen the building from the nearby countryside.
Solution
Working for Winvic Construction, Maccaferri provided a retaining wall solution which was to be installed around the perimeter of the development. The walls will provide concealment for the centre from the neighbouring countryside and secure the site to a certain extent.
The gabions are constructed of polymer-coated Galmac Zn-Al 5% Double Twist woven mesh which provides long-term corrosion protection. The gabions were filled with locally sourced stone making them environmentally sustainable and also reducing trips to the site from further destinations. The mesh is flexible to a certain degree which made it a good solution regarding a potential settlement of the earth. Maccaferris polymer coated double twist wire mesh ensures a design life of 120 years and is BBA certified.
