Draped Netting Solution at Residential Site

Challenge

Maccaferri were approached by leading civil engineering contractor Jones Brothers (Henllan) Ltd to provide an effective rockfall protection solution for a high-risk site. The steep rockface presented a significant hazard, with the potential for falling debris to impact nearby properties and endanger residents.

A comprehensive assessment of the rockface condition and site topography highlighted the need for a reliable rockfall mitigation system capable of controlling loose material and preventing uncontrolled rockfall events. The solution required not only immediate risk reduction but also long-term durability, low maintenance, and compliance with recognised industry standards.

Solution

Maccaferri delivered a fully engineered rockfall protection system based on a draped netting design. The system utilised Double Twist (DT) rockfall netting with a Galmac C2 coating, providing enhanced corrosion resistance and an assumed working life of up to 50 years in accordance with BS EN 10223-3.

The design was developed in line with CIRIA guide C775, the industry standard for rock netting systems, covering design, installation, and whole-life management. Detailed engineering calculations were carried out to evaluate loads and capacities across the netting system, including crest wire ropes and anchorage elements. Partial safety factors recommended in CIRIA C775 were applied to ensure structural stability and long-term performance.

Maccaferri’s specialist design software, MacRo Studio – MacRo 2, was used to model and optimise the system, ensuring an efficient and site-specific solution. Installation was carried out by experienced contractors Abcas Ltd, following best practice for rockfall netting systems.

The completed draped rockfall netting system now acts as a continuous protective barrier, containing loose rock and preventing debris from reaching vulnerable areas below. This solution has successfully mitigated rockfall risk, improving site safety and delivering a durable, cost-effective slope stabilisation system for the client.
