Birnam Crescent Housing Development

Problem

Glasgow is undergoing expansion in regards to new home developments and in a specific area in Bearsden, on Birnam Crescent, Cala Homes started to build 20 homes. The site was uneven and needed stabilising works and reinforcement in order to build the homes. The earthworks for this project were significant in regards to it being a successful development.

Solution

Maccaferri Construction was awarded the contract by Ground Developments Ltd (GDL) to design, supply and install a retaining structure to retain the site. The best possible solution was our Terramesh® System with a design life of 120 years, thus making it a sustainable solution in regards to longevity and also with the added guarantee of a BBA certification.

The wall was 148 metres long and had varying elevations in height from 2m and 5m. The Terramesh® units are filled with locally sourced stone which is environmentally friendly in the fact that it reduces carbon footprint—fewer trips to the site with the fill. Each layer is placed onto the completed layer beneath which then produces an aesthetically pleasing facing to a retaining wall structure, and also compliments the environment it surrounds due to the use of natural fill.
