Sustainable Gabion Solutions at Smritivan Earthquake Memorial
Gabion structures adopted over conventional RCC structures for their flexibility, durability and aesthetic appeal
Use of sustainable and flexible solutions in constructing the reservoir, sun point, pathways and landscape ensured permeability and resilience.
Maccaferri’s Gabion solutions were instrumental in the construction of the Smritivan Earthquake Memorial in Bhuj, Gujarat. Built to honor the resilience of people after the 2001 earthquake, the 470-acre site posed challenges of erodible soil and uneven slopes, making long-term stability a key concern. The vision was to create sustainable infrastructure that not only preserves memories but also flourishes as a green ecological space.
To address these challenges, EPD certified Gabion structures made of double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh were adopted. Unlike conventional RCC structures, gabions offered a sustainable solution with lower carbon emissions and an aesthetically pleasing appearance. These structures were chosen for their ease of installation, flexibility, and ability to integrate with the environment. Their modular and flexible nature allowed them to adapt to the site’s undulating contours seamlessly, ensuring harmony between engineering performance and the memorial’s architectural vision.
