Sabarmati Riverbank Protection using Terramesh System
A two-tier Terramesh® retaining wall for the protection of the Sabarmati Riverfront, ensuring lasting stability and resilience.
Use of Terramesh® System for Constructing a Two-Tier Retaining Wall at the Sabarmati Riverfront
The Sabarmati River Front Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) adopted Maccaferri’s EPD certified reinforced soil technology, which played a pivotal role in protecting the Sabarmati riverbanks and reclaiming land on both sides of the river. Flowing through the centre of Ahmedabad, the Sabarmati experiences heavy rainfall and high flow velocities, leading to bank erosion, riverbed scour, and loss of valuable land along its banks.
To address these challenges, Maccaferri’s Terramesh® system was used to construct a two-tier retaining wall for the Sabarmati Riverfront, providing long-term stability to the reclaimed land and protection to the riverbank. The flexible structure ensured strength, durability, and adaptability to differential settlements, while being engineered to withstand hydraulic pressures and maintain the integrity of the riverfront.
Designed to withstand both flooding and seismic activity, the structure has stood strong since 2005, even enduring a once-in-a-100-year flood (2005 Gujarat Flood), while also supporting natural vegetation growth on the facia.
