Reinforced Soil Walls and Slope Reinforcement at Taratarini Temple, Odisha
Maccaferri’s reinforced soil wall system featuring TerraMesh, ParaLink geogrids, and soil nailing was installed across three critical tiers to ensure slope stability and create additional space for parking and pedestrian movement.
To overcome challenges of slope failure and space constraints at Taratarini Temple, Maccaferri installed a reinforced soil wall system using TerraMesh and ParaLink, ensuring structural stability and improved access for devotees.
Taratarini Temple, situated atop the Kumari Hills near Berhampur in Ganjam District, Odisha, is a prominent religious site visited by a large number of devotees and tourists throughout the year. However, the location presented critical challenges. The access to the temple was restricted to a single-lane road with inadequate parking facilities and the slope on the left side of the temple showed signs of failure due to sliding. Additionally, the left side of the temple was close to the edge of the hill, required widening to ensure the safe and smooth movement of devotees around the temple premises.
To overcome these challenges, a shored reinforced soil wall system was adopted using Maccaferri’s TerraMesh System (TMS) along with ParaLink monoaxial geogrids for primary reinforcement, supported by strategically designed soil nailing to stabilize steep slopes. The intervention was executed in three tiers, a 27-meter-high bottom tier creating approximately 32 meters of width at the road level for parking, a 7.5-meter-high middle tier and a 30-meter-high top tier delivering an additional 30 meters at the hilltop to facilitate safe pedestrian movement.
The completion of this project has significantly improved the accessibility and safety of the site, ensuring secure access for devotees while preserving the structural and spiritual sanctity of the Taratarini Temple.
