India’s rapidly expanding infrastructure landscape demands innovative, cost-effective and time-efficient engineering solutions to support its growing transportation network. With increasing investments in highways, bridges and urban connectivity projects, there is a strong need for technologies that can adapt to diverse geotechnical conditions while ensuring durability, speed of construction and long-term performance. 

Addressing this growing requirement, a major highway development project in Tamil Nadu, was executed using a Reinforced Soil (RS) wall system as an efficient alternative to conventional reinforced concrete retaining walls. The project involved the four-laning of the road from Madurai to Paramakudi and two-laning up to Ramanathapuram, enabling improved connectivity across the region. 

Maccaferri’s MacRes® RS wall system, featuring precast concrete panels as fascia and ParaWeb® geostrips as reinforcement, was adopted to ensure flexibility, rapid construction and long-term performance. ParaWeb® consists of high-tenacity polyester yarn tendons encased in a polyethylene sheath, offering high strength and durability. The system incorporated an innovative cavity connector for secure panel-to-reinforcement connection, while customized ParaWeb® laying was designed to accommodate skew angles ranging from 27.5° to 48°. To address challenging ground conditions, cohesive soil up to 2-3 meters was replaced and MacTex® non-woven geotextile was installed between in-situ and replaced soil to ensure effective separation and filtration. With wall heights reaching up to 14.4 meters, the solution delivered a robust, economical and aesthetically appealing retaining system, enabling faster construction, adaptability to complex geometries and long-term structural stability.
